Wow, this is seriously good writing! It's no easy matter to write such a short piece which introduces interesting and well realized characters and divulges so much of their backstory, all without compromising the integrity, efficiency and simplicity of its narrative. Too often, the artifice and manipulation of short story writing interjects itself annoyingly between the story and its reader. Not so here: as I read I actually imagined the scene unfolding in real time.
